STARING AT THE SEA:

Neil is a surfer, artist and teacher who wades with his work through dark tides and folding waves. Living in the coastal landscape, Robinson is interested in critiquing contemporary coastal politics, and the ways in which coastal cultures are perceived by outsiders. Though his work may grow from commercial forms, like placid seascapes or the pretty kinds of pots you see in a coastal gallery, his energetic, and sometimes performative interventions subvert the hierarchy of person and place. Robinson’s work may provoke or confront the viewer, but its friendly, conversational approach allows unique space for a point of shared understanding to be reached between artist, viewer and oceanic environment.

Storytelling Symposium: Shared Narratives of Research and Practice

25 March 2022.

Context:
As makers and researchers, we are in a constant exchange of stories and telling: between artist and work, between work and audience, between all the voices of the past and all the ears of the future. Stories can be about place, about people, about things, about time, about a pile of dry sticks. The telling is the spark, the medium, the performance.

This exciting one-day postgraduate symposium and exhibition considers how stories and telling stories are central to how we imagine work, make work, and communicate through our work.

Contribution to symposium:

Co-organiser

Film/presentation: Printmaking through ceramics

Demonstration: Printmaking as means of provocation;

Live lino printing onto t-shirts using homemade printing press during the intervals of the symposium. The t-shirts were available for the general public to have in exchange for a donation to shelter.org.
